"Caroline LeCount" Original Painting by Sophia Thompson

This portrait by Sophia Thompson is of Caroline LeCount.   In 1863, LeCount was one of five students to graduate from the Institute for Colored Youth.  Soon after, she became a public school teacher and principal and a civil rights activist who fought to desegregate street cars in Philadelphia.   Sophia, a Philadelphia high school student, uses her art as a way for her to cope with the world and also as a way to pay homage to minority groups.  Just as LeCount raised her voice in 1863 so does Sophia today.   A percentage of the profit from the sale of this unframed portrait is going to organizations fighting for social justice.  Remember her name, Sophia Thompson,  this young woman is going places!
